TENNIS – HOW IT IS NOW A BIG PART OF OUR LIVES

We all know what tennis is, everyone in the world has heard of it and most of us play it from time to time though that doesn’t mean to say that we are any good at it. We all know the sport but don’t really know much about it, we watch it on the TV but do we really understand it all?

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Tennis is one of the most oldest of sports that is steadily coming greatly into fashion but for those who don’t know the game well then tennis has two players or four if it is doubles and they will be using their rackets to hit the ball back and forth over the net. When the player who hit the ball out of play or doesn’t return the ball they give the opposition a point – which will be 15 to null. Then if they do the same again then it goes to 30 null but if they get a point back then it goes to 30 15 to your opponent. A few things in tennis you must remember are:

• Never argue with the umpire

• Always be sportsman like even if you lose

• Play to your best

• Never be ashamed of losing the match

In the UK it is a quite popular sport, many play it in the country, some of which play it professionally and some don’t and just play for fun to keep fit. The sport was established in Britain though with them producing many top quality players and it is also something which is always played for titles and tournaments as well as being introduced to the Olympic Games also.

When you play, you aren’t too young or too old, you can play the sport at any age no matter if you are eight or eighty it really does not matter as long as you enjoy playing it. For tournaments though which are usually entered by the professional tennis players then it is usually divided into a junior section and an adult section really in which they play for the title of world champion and get a prize also. The major tournaments are Grand Slams or the Majors as it referred to; the French and Australian Opens, the US Open and which is the biggest – Wimbledon. All of which are played on different types of surfaces including hard courts, red clay courts and one which is mostly used, grass courts.

There are of course rules when it comes to playing tennis and what has been introduced into the game since the mid 70’s or so has to be video technology which is there to be used to review some decisions. A player can challenge a decision if one or both believe a wrong call has been made but usually only in many extreme cases but the umpire can be challenged to take another look at the electronic view call ‘Hawk-Eye’.
